BookTrust Represents Development Week is back, offering free industry training to aspiring and/or emerging authors and illustrators of colour. With a mix of workshops, advice clinics, and expert Q&As, the training sessions are hosted by well-known children's book authors and illustrators and notable industry experts.

This year's theme is 'Take the Spotlight' and we're focusing on how to navigate the often-daunting side of the publishing industry that is PR and Marketing.

All Development Week sessions will be virtual and take place between March 17-21 2025. Please see the full Development Week programme below.

This is your opportunity to ask marketing expert Anna Caig any burning questions you have.

Whether you're wondering how to set up a mailing list, how to give your Instagram a boost, or how to send a press release to your local media, this is your time to get tailored advice.

And if you don't know where to start with your marketing efforts, that's fine too - Anna will have some practical steps you can follow to get you moving in the right direction to connect with people who'll love your work.

For authors: Editor one-to-ones

Writing to literary agents should be an exciting exercise. Often it is anything but. This clinic is for writers who are ready to start submitting to agents but are not sure if their pitch will make the cut.

We're giving you the opportunity to send your submission package (cover letter, synopsis and first pages) to industry expert and Storymix founder, Jasmine Richards – for honest review and feedback. Sign up if you're looking for expert constructive assessment of one of the potentially most important letters you will ever write.

For illustrators: Portfolio review

Are you an aspiring illustrator of colour for children's books or a debut illustrator? Sign up to a 1:1 advice clinic with Farshore's Creative Director Tiffany Leeson or Elorine Grant, Art Director for HarperCollins Children's Department.

You'll submit your portfolio in advance for Tiffany or Elorine to review. Each session will allow for deep discussion and an opportunity to get expert industry advice.
