The Green Bicycle

Wadjda lives in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with her parents. Just like so many other girls in so many other countries she struggles with school work, has a crush on a boy and sometimes gets into trouble. When she sees a green bicycle being delivered to a toy shop she knows she wants to ride it through the streets of Riyadh and starts creating schemes and plans to raise the money to buy the bicycle.

The Green Bicycle takes the reader into the heart of Saudi Arabian life. We learn what citizens are and are not permitted to do and the vast differences between the lives of the male and female citizens. Haifaa Al Mansour brings cheeky Wadjda to life and we share her hopes, dreams, trials and concerns.
