The Only Monster
Publisher: Frances Lincoln Children’s Books
A little monster lives happily with her parents in the lovely town of Bonglibod. Yet when it comes to school photo day, little monster starts to feel sad that she doesn’t have any siblings to have her photo taken with.
Everyone else – the Jooberwibblies, the Humplebutts, the WindyFlips and the Parps – all have lots and lots of brothers and sisters.
On her way home from school, she tells her dad why she feels sad, and Dad reassures her that families should be measured by love and not numbers. Plus, the little monster has all of those friends and their brothers and sisters, which is wonderful.
This rhyming picture book has lots of fun vocabulary to enjoy in all the inventive and silly monster names, as well as Brendan Kearney’s beautiful and detailed illustration, which is a particular joy. There’s a nice message here about being an only child and not comparing ourselves to other families, too.
