I am Brave

Publisher: Scholastic

There are all sorts of ways to be brave every day.

In the things that we do and the things that we say.

Making friends is brave, saying sorry is brave, being true to yourself is brave. This heartwarming, encouraging book suggests various situations where the word ‘brave’ is usually mentioned, like climbing high at the park, or going to the doctor, andless obvious times where being thoughtful and kind takes bravery. Interestingly, it also gives children permission to say no to situations they’re not comfortable with, like jumping into a pool, and reassures them that doing it their own way is actually pretty brave.

The text is written in the first person, with aflowing rhythm and rhyme, meaning that reading it aloud feels natural. There is a lovely repetition throughout that the child could join in with - ‘I’m brave, I am ME!’ The illustrations are warm and very inclusive. A different child is depicted in each scene, so the child reader might be able to imagine themselves in each scenario. Life-affirming.
