Set in 1829, this historical novel is inspired by the Rainhill Trials, a competition which was conducted to select the fastest, most reliable steam locomotive of the time. The winner would receive £500 and, more importantly, be awarded the contract to run the brand new Liverpool & Manchester Rail Way.
Father and son inventors George and Robert Stephenson are developing their Premium Engine, which would later be known as Rocket. Concerned that their rivals may try to steal or sabotage their work, the Stephensons hire 14-year-old Edward Entwistle as a night watchman to guard their locomotive.
The Trials draw nearer and a series of accidents befalls some of the engines, leading Edward and his new friend Prudence to suspect foul play. They decide to investigate and, piecing together the clues, they draw up a list of suspects. However, as they come closer to uncovering the truth, Edward finds himself in extreme danger.
This enthralling mystery contains a wealth of historical detail and touches on issues of the time, such as political unrest and opposition to the Rail Way. With plenty of twists and turns, it will keep readers guessing until the very end.
