Where the Sea Meets the Sky

Publisher: Hodder

Sea otter Sophie is snuggling on her mummy’s tummy in the sea when she asks mum what the horizon is. Yet when mum goes to catch a fish, Sophie spies a lighthouse on the horizon and decides to investigate. On her way, she finds quite a few things between her and the horizon, and some of them are a little scary… fortunately, Mum finds Sophie and they return to their snuggles, just in time for sunset.

Riko Sekiguchi won the Carmelite Picture Book Prize for new children’s book illustrators with her illustrations for this book, in which an adorable sea otter adventures forth into the wide ocean. A lovely rhyming text by Peter Bently makes this a perfect bedtime book, in which Sophie meets some peril, but is saved just in time by her mother. As well as a sweet book about the bond between parents and children, there’s also some great nature observation to be had, with little ones learning about whales, sea otters and the bright fish of the ocean.
