The Bison and the Butterfly

As Bison goes about her day, looking for a friend, she learns how her habits help other creatures. When she eats the bark of trees, she makes it easier for woodpeckers to find insect larvae. When she rolls in the dust, she creates bare patches for lizards to sunbathe. She is crucial to the ecosystem.

Then she meets Butterfly, who enjoys fluttering through the woods with the sun on her back, and so Butterfly flutters while Bison tramples, creating space for Butterfly’s favourite plants – the cow wheat flower. 

This is published in collaboration with Kent Wildlife Trust, and at the end, there is information on the Wilder Blean Project, which reintroduced European bison to a woodland in Kent. It’s been a wonderful success story because in only two years, many species have returned to the area, thanks to the bison and other animals. 

The delightful illustrations will charm children of all ages, while, appropriately for a book about nature and conservation, like all Ivy Kids books, it is printed on 100% recycled paper.
