Poetry Comics

Publisher: Chronicle Books

Grant Snider uses a combination of charming, comic-style illustrations and meditative poetry to take readers on a pensive journey through the four seasons.

Two child characters are central, and they muse on topics as significant as friendship, school and self-confidence, and as whimsical as cloud-spotting, bubbles and rollercoasters. This lightness of touch works well and allows for the more emotionally introspective content to be introduced in a gentle way.

The art, much like the text itself, is minimal but expressive. Every poem is paired with its own sequence of illustrations which createspleasing, complimentary relationship between text and imageThe colour palette is muted and calm - mirrored by the simple, haiku-like poetic vignettes.

This book occupies a unique position by introducing reflective poetry through comics. The well-known panel format will be sure to encourage readers who might otherwise find poetry books daunting or uninteresting.

Similarly, by employing a simplistic, conversational tone, Snider makes poetic writing very accessible  with some of the poems directly encouraging readers to have a go at writing their own poetry.

While contemplative, the themes remain light and optimistic, making it a great choice for introducing poetry to comic book fans of all ages.

Mae Grant Snider yn defnyddio cyfuniad o ddarluniau swynol, arddull comig a barddoniaeth fyfyriol i dywys darllenwyr ar daith feddylgar drwy’r pedwar tymor.

Rhywfaint o farddoniaeth a darluniau sydd yma, ond maen nhw’n fynegiannol a bydd fformat adnabyddus y paneli yn annog darllenwyr na fydden nhw fel arfer yn dewis barddoniaeth. Mae rhai o’r cerddi’n annog darllenwyr yn uniongyrchol i roi cynnig ar ysgrifennu eu cerddi eu hunain, gan ei wneud yn ddewis gwych ar gyfer cyflwyno barddoniaeth mewn ffordd atyniadol mewn lleoliadau ystafell ddosbarth.
