Abby’s family are God-fearing Californian horse dealers, with a large ranch in the country where they take in abandoned horses. Working on the ranch, Abby is immediately drawn to new horse True Blue, who has a mysterious and tragic past - but soon she senses something strange and haunting in the air.

The third book in Jane Smiley's series about Abby and her family moves their fractured relationships onwards, as well as introducing a new horse, and a supernatural element.
