Midnight Treasure

Publisher: Quercus

Tibor is a 12-year-old werewolf adopted at birth by a powerful vampire (who are called vampirs in the book; they have slightly evolved from the vampires we might think of from Gothic horror).

He lives in a scary castle with his best friend Roza, a vampir that has been turned into a talking Alsatian dog. It's an alternative universe where vampirs rule and darkness reigns, but not a truly hideous darkness. The vampirs barely ever drink human blood anymore and humans and vampirs live in a dark harmony together.

Tibor is chosen to go on a quest for the Midnight Treasure, but what exactly is it, what does it mean, and who can he trust?

This is a wonderful, imaginative book for keen readers aged 9 or 10but for less regular readers it's best for 11+, as it’s quite a long book. The world-building feels very believable, so readers can get really swept up in the story, which is an epic adventure quest.

The author spent a lot of time in Transylvania and uncovered a lot of details and myths which are thrillingly woven into the story, and he also has Transylvanian heritage. It’s a little bit scary, but not too scary, and it’s funny too, with many great characters to enjoy. Perfect for fans of Northern Lights.
