5 fantastic farmyard books 14/03/25
Bindi Babes
Publisher: Puffin
Jazz, Gina and Amber are doing just fine. Sure, they don’t see much of Dad, who always seems to be at work, but that just means they can stay up watching inappropriate TV and ordering takeaways.
They are cool, funny, popular, well-behaved, hard-working and reliable – even adopting a lame duck friend, Kim, and standing up to bullies. In fact, they have everything they could possibly want except the one thing they never speak about: Mum.
Then, disaster! Auntie (Dad’s sister) arrives from India to look after them and, finding their freedom under threat, they are determined to get rid of her.
Since the death of their mother, Jazz, Gina, Amber (and their dad) have buried their grief. They don’t share memories, photos or feelings but put on a convincing performance for the world that says everything is fine.
It takes an interfering Auntie, whose management style is remarkably like Mum’s was, to allow the girls and their dad the space to confront their loss.
The weighty issue of bereavement is handled with sensitivity and realism in a book that is, at its heart, funny, heartwarming, accessible and positive. A modern classic.
